About the Study

Through the I-515 Alternatives Development Study, NDOT is working to improve operations and safety in the Las Vegas area.  Our project team has identified several potential operation and safety improvements within the study corridor, and is in the process of analyzing and evaluating these identified improvements.

What makes a good project?  Below are some of the criteria by which potential projects are being analyzed:

Potential improvements should:

  • Significantly improve operations of the freeway without negatively impacting interchanges
  • Significantly improve safety
  • Be able to be completed with no or minimal right-of-way
  • Don’t conflict with other planned improvements in the area
  • Be able to be implemented in the short-term (before the year 2025)
For each of the potential improvements, the team will also develop a cost estimate to further refine and rank the top projects. A two-day screening workshop was held in February 2016, in which stakeholders from partner agencies reviewed and evaluated the potential improvements identified to date.  Once the top three projects are identified and ranked, a Value Engineering Analysis and Benefit Cost Analysis will be performed.

The team will use a Planning and Environmental Linkages (PEL) approach to shorten the time required to take projects from planning to implementation.  Therefore, decisions made during this study could be used in future NDOT environmental studies to comply with the national Environmental Policy Act. More information on this process can be found at the Federal Highway Administration's website.
