Research Program

Experimental study on installing tilted signs to prevent snow accretion on sign surfacesThe Research Program identifies and develops new technical knowledge and assists with implementation into common practice. Research needs are identified in the following manner:
  • Solicitation of problem statements provides department personnel the opportunity to explain their unique research needs; problem statements may also originate outside the department, these must be endorsed by an NDOT division or district
  • Academic researchers may submit proposals to conduct research
  • Approved proposals are screened by research staff for consistency with research goals
  • The Research Advisory Committee (RAC) prioritizes the research statements
  • When projects conclude, a research report is generated describing the scope of the project, outcomes, and recommendations

Product Evaluation

Product Evaluation maintains the qualified product list (or QPL), and coordinates the evaluation of products that may be used by the Department and its contractors

By cataloging and sharing print and electronic reference materials, coordinating loans of materials from other libraries, and assisting in the search for specific transportation-related information, the Library serves as a unique resource for NDOT staff, other government agencies and the public

Additionally, the Research Division administers the Local Technical Assistance Program (LTAP), operated by a community college
