Lake Tahoe, a rare national treasure lies on the border between California and Nevada. It is situated
in the Sierra Nevada Mountains at about 6,229 feet above sea level. The main appeal of the Lake Tahoe
area is its natural beauty and peaceful environment. Over 3.5 million people travel from throughout
the United States and the world to visit Lake Tahoe each year.
Lake Tahoe is the largest alpine lake in North America at 22 miles long, 12 miles wide, and a surface
area of 191 square miles. The lake perimeter, or the distance around the lake, is approximately 72
miles. With a maximum depth of 1,645 feet, Lake Tahoe is the 2nd deepest fresh water lake in the
United States and 10th deepest in the world. It is also the highest lake of its size in the U.S.
Surface water temperatures in the lake range from 68° F in the summer, to 41° F during the winter;
however, because of the great depth, the lake does not freeze over during the winter.
Many streams flow into Lake Tahoe; however, Lake Tahoe's one and only discharge point is the Truckee River. The Truckee flows northeast through Reno and into Pyramid Lake, both located in Nevada.
Some of the fun facts about Lake Tahoe are that if all the water from Lake Tahoe were to spill over, there would be enough water to cover a flat area the size of California with 14 inches of water. Also, the amount of water that evaporates from the surface of the lake every year could supply a city the size of Los Angeles for 5 years.
