In 2002, the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) adopted the Landscape and Aesthetics Master
Plan, raising the bar for context-sensitive design. This plan formalizes the planning and coordination
that has occurred on NDOT Environmental Improvement projects since 1996.
Based on the vision and recommendations of the Master Plan, the US 395, West US 50, SR 28, SR 207 and SR 431 Landscape and Aesthetic Corridor Plan is in the final phase of development. This plan establishes the vision for the landscape and aesthetics for each highway, synthesizing historic, current, and future conditions to improve the visual appearance of each corridor. Major design themes and materials to be used in landscape and aesthetic treatments are identified within the corridor plan.
The Lake of the Sky design segment (Lake Tahoe) includes US 50, SR 431 from the US 395 intersections, SR 28 and SR 207. The spectacular natural setting drives the design objectives, which are focused on visually integrating the roadway into the environment and improving facilities to enhance the traveler’s driving experience. In addition, the corridor plan incorporates the general goals associated with the scenic designation of US 50, SR 28 and SR 431 as well as reflecting guidelines set by the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency and Washoe Tribe. Above is a map identifying design objectives for the Lake of the Sky highway corridor.
