Free Idling Reduction Lecture Offers Tips to Reduce Pollution
With gas prices at record highs, there is no better time than now to reduce the amount of money spent on fuel. Tips on lessening air pollution and vehicle wear and costs by reducing the idling time of diesel vehicles and equipment will be offered during a free idling reduction presentation November 14 in Las Vegas.
A partnership between the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) and Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada (RTC), the lecture outlines the health, environmental and fuel cost savings benefits of reduced idling. Drivers could see significant cost savings by following easy tips to reduce idling. Warming up vehicles for just 30 seconds before driving, avoiding use of remote car starters, and turning off the engine when stopped for more than 10 seconds, except at traffic signals, can save money and prevent unnecessary engine wear and pollution.
The presentation will also mention such alternatives as auxiliary power units, automatic shut-down devices and on-board battery-powered heaters and air conditioning, for construction, motorcoach, school bus and commercial transport vehicles which often idle to maintain passenger comfort.
“The focus of the lecture is on diesel-powered vehicles and equipment, but the concepts and benefits apply to those who drive passenger cars as well,” Pat Mohn, NDOT Air Quality Specialist and host of the presentations, explains. “Unnecessary idling produces unnecessary air pollution, wastes money and fuel and contributes to engine wear. Reducing idle time can save money on fuel and maintenance in all types of vehicles.”
The free, one-hour lecture will be held at RTC offices at 600 South Grand Central Parkway, Las Vegas, and is open to the general public. Private lectures for public and private Nevada fleet operators are available upon request for free. Further information is available at (775) 888-7693.
