Interstate 80 Improvement Project in Sparks Set to Begin

Major pavement improvements on Interstate 80 in Sparks will begin the last week in September, the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) has announced.

Various construction closures will take place on I-80 Sparks interchanges through November 2009.

The entire paving project will resurface nearly two and a half miles of I-80 between the East McCarran and Vista exits using the crack and seat technique. The process cuts structured cracks into existing concrete and compacts it back down as improved roadway. Using existing concrete not only saves the cost of new material, but also minimizes waste. A overlay surface tops off and smooths the roadway. Repaving improvements to certain I-80 Sparks interchanges are also part of the project.

The road improvements are scheduled to complete in summer 2010. The approximately $8.6 million in improvements, made by contractor Sierra Nevada Construction, will provide a smoother, safer drive for the up to 60,000 vehicles every day which travel the road.

Intermittent traffic controls and lane restrictions will remain in effect through construction to safely guide motorists through the road work. Motorists are advised to drive at posted construction speed limits, or slower as necessary for conditions. NDOT also offers safe work zone driving tips on-line at www.nevadadot.com/safety. Motorists can dial ‘511’ or log onto www.nevadadot.com before driving for highway construction information.
