First NDOT Economic Stimulus Project Advertised for Bid

Nevada’s first transportation stimulus project, an estimated $14 to $16 million for repaving of I-80 20 miles east of Lovelock, will be advertised for bids on Thursday, March 19, according to the Nevada Department of Transportation.

The project involves repaving 13 miles of I-80 from the Rye Patch Interchange to just east of the Humboldt Interchange in Pershing County. Actual constuction is expected to begin in early June.

Four more projects estimated at almost $40 million are expected to advertise for bids in April. A total of an estimated $70 million in stimulus projects are expected to be under construction statewide by this summer.

“I am pleased with the organization and expedience of NDOT Director Susan Martinovich’s plans,” Governor Jim Gibbons said, “This project and others like it will spur growth in jobs and improve our infrastructure.”

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, signed Feb. 17 by President Obama, provides approximately $201 million in Nevada transportation funding. Thirty percent of that funding is allocated to local transportation planning organizations in Clark and Washoe counties, while approximately seven million must be spent in rural areas. All the stimulus projects are expected to be under construction by early next year.

On March 12, the State Transportation Board approved the following state projects (list attached), as well as other projects prioritized by local regional transportation commissions and counties: • 8 preservation projects valued at approximately $119,200,000 • 1 safety project valued at approximately $3,600,000 • 1 landscape project valued at approximately $9,000,000 • 1 enhancement project valued at approximately $3,000,000

Much of the work includes highway preservation projects such as repaving. Such repaving and repairing of roadways before more costly, time-involved repairs are needed has saved the department millions of dollars a year.
