Over-dimensional Vehicle Permits

WHEN ARE OVERSIZED OR OVERWEIGHT VEHICLE PERMITS REQUIRED?

Over Dimensional Vehicle (ODV): All non-reducible (non-divisible) vehicle combinations or loads that:

  • Exceed 80,000 pounds gross weight; or
  • Exceed 8 feet, 6 inches in width; or
  • Exceed 14 feet in height; or
  • Exceed 10 feet of front or rear overhang; or
  • Exceed 70 feet in length.


  • Contact the NDOT ODV Permits Office for ODV permitting. See below.
Shorter Combination Vehicle (SCV): All reducible (divisible) vehicle combinations or loads that:

  • Qualify as a "commodity"(see NAC 484.464 );and
  • Exceed 80,000 pounds gross weight and do not exceed 70 feet in length; or
  • Do not qualify for Longer Combination Vehicle (LCV) permits (see NRS 484.739.9(c) ).


  • Contact the NDOT ODV Permits Office for ODV permitting. See below.
Longer Combination Vehicle (LCV): All reducible (divisible) vehicle combinations or loads that:

  • Exceed 70 feet in length.


  • Contact the Department of Motor Vehicles (Motor Carrier Division) for LCV permitting, as well as for truck registration and special fuel tax requirements.

  • Valid for one year from date of issue.
  • NDOT’s goal is to provide 30-day service on annual permit requests whether first-time or renewal. Permittee may apply via fax or at the office.
  • NDOT highly recommends that permittees plan at least 30 days in advance of any desired movement or lapse of any existing annual permit.
  • Manufactured and Mobile Homes are permitted in accordance with NAC 484.525 (2b), NRS 484.762 and NRS 484.7625.

  • Valid for five days and one trip only. May be authorized a round-trip between two points when only one leg is laden.
  • NDOT’s goal is to provide next day service on single-trip permit requests, but the permittee must apply one business day prior to any desired movement, either by telephone before 4:00 PM or at the office before 4:15 PM. Permittees are limited to five permit requests per telephone call after 3:00 PM.
  • Due to the unpredictable volume of requests on any given day, and to ensure a permit is issued on time, NDOT highly recommends that permittees apply at least two (2) business days in advance of any desired movement date.
  • Manufactured and Mobile Homes are permitted in accordance with NAC 484.525 (2b), NRS 484.762 and NRS 484.7625.

Special Purpose ODV or Super Load ODV Permits
(Dimensions exceeding those permissible
with an Annual or Single-Trip Permit)
  • Permits are considered on a case-by-case basis for exceptionally large or heavy vehicle combinations or loads.
  • See NDOT Instruction 6-07 for details and exceptions.
  • Must apply at least 30 days in advance by telephone, at the office, or in writing.
  • Typically valid for five days – one trip only.
  • Fees start at $25. Additional coordination within NDOT and with other agencies is normally required in these cases, and additional costs may be incurred and billed to the permittee.

  • July 4 (Independence Day)
  • First Monday in September (Labor Day)
  • Fourth Thursday in November (Thanksgiving Day)
  • December 25 (Christmas Day)
Note: The holiday hour restrictions as described in the above charts are in effect only during hours of high traffic volume associated with these specific holidays. The actual restricted timeframes may or may not be on the observed holiday. The chart below describes when the holiday hours, weekend hours, and hours of darkness restrictions are in effect when the observed holiday falls on different days of the week. Other common state and federal holidays are intentionally not included in this list and therefore holiday hour restrictions do not apply to them, though the normal restrictions for weekend hours and hours of darkness do apply. These restrictions correspond to WASHTO guidelines.
