U.S. 93 Improvements – Buchanan Boulevard to Hoover Dam Interchange
All Four Lanes on U.S. 93 Now Open

All four lanes in the U.S. 93 improvement project area officially opened on Nov. 22.
Final roadside construction work will continue throughout the next several months to complete some of the final items like putting up guard rail, placing the remaining utilities and doing work on the medians as well as the shoulders. While most of the work will be done on the shoulder or off the road, there will be times where road closures will be necessary. Dynamic message signs will be used to notify motorist of upcoming closures, as well as frequent updates to the project page on NDOT’s website.
Interruptions to traffic will occur again for a short time frame in the spring when crews come back to apply a final layer of pavement and conclude the project.
Construction Updates
The Nevada Department of Transportation will be closing one lane in each direction on U.S. 93 from Buchanan Blvd., up to Lake Shore Drive beginning Wednesday, April 25th for approximately two weeks for final paving. This will be followed by the paving south of the area from Lake Shore Drive to the Hoover Dam exit at a later date. This is part of the final work to be completed on the U.S. 93 widening project that began in August of 2011 and was widened to two lanes in each direction by the end of November.
Project Information
Since the opening of the Hoover Dam Bypass Bridge in October 2010, congestion along U.S. 93 in the Boulder City area has increased, especially on weekends and holidays. Between 15,000 and 22,000 vehicles travel this route each day, creating bottlenecks where the roadway narrows from two lanes to one lane. NDOT intends to help relieve the congestion by widening U.S. 93 and improve safety and operations by constructing improvements at the intersections of Colorado Street, Nevada Way, and Lakeshore, and at the Hacienda Hotel and Casino.
Short-term Improvements from This Project
1. Widen U.S. 93 to two lanes in each direction
2. Provide the following operational and safety improvements:
3. Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) & Signage Enhancements
- Portable Dynamic Message Signs (DMS) at strategic locations
- Flow detectors every mile from Veterans Memorial to Hoover Dam Bypass Bridge
- Multiple cameras operated by RTC’s Freeway Arterial System of Transportation (FAST) give travelers ability to decide best route
- Sign enhancements at Hoover Dam Interchange
Fast-track Project Schedule
Construction began in summer 2011 and the improved U.S. 93 opened to traffic November 22, 2011. Final roadside construction work will continue throughout the several months following November 2011 to complete some of the final items like putting up guard rail, placing the remaining utilities and doing work on the medians as well as the shoulders.
Typically a project of this nature would take one year to complete. But, crews stepped up production, particularly in the last few weeks of the project, working around the clock and seven days a week in order to complete the lane widening in three months.
SPEED LIMIT
The final speed limit for U.S. 93 will be determined after the final layer of pavement has been added, which will be in late April (pending weather). After the final pavement is completed a speed survery will be conducted to determine the final and permanent speed limit for U.S. 93. This should be determined by end of May approximately.
Truck Restrictions Lifted through Project Construction Zone
All construction-related restrictions on over-dimensional and other commercial vehicles through the U.S. 93 construction area have been lifted. Over-dimensional vehicle permittees are no longer restricted from the work zone and all trucks and other commercial vehicles exceeding 26,000 lbs GVW can now travel southbound U.S. 93 through the construction zone.
But, all over-dimensional vehicles must receive over-dimensional vehicle permits and follow all pertinent laws and regulations while traveling in Nevada. Further information is available on the over-dimensional vehicle permit page of this website.
