The National Asphalt Pavement Association (NAPA) announced today that Granite Construction Co. of Sparks has won a 2012 Quality in Construction Award for excellence in construction of a Nevada Department of Transportation asphalt pavement project.
The Quality in Construction Award recognizes asphalt pavements of excellence. “The Quality in Construction Award recognizes paving jobs completed in line with best practices and standards known to yield high-quality asphalt pavements,” stated Kurt Bechthold, 2012 Chairman of the NAPA Board of Directors. “This award demonstrates the high quality of work Granite Construction Co. is achieving.”
Granite Construction Co. and the Nevada Department of Transportation won the award for the overlay of 19 miles of U.S. 93 near Currie. The project’s use of cold in-place recycling allowed the utilization of existing materials to increase the structural capacity of the road while reducing the amount of new resources required. With the nearest asphalt plant 90 miles away from the rural location, Granite Construction Co. used a portable, on-site plant to produce the mix. The company’s partnering with the Nevada Department of Transportation included extensive workday cooperation that, despite the project’s high elevation and short paving season, helped produce a smooth, high-quality pavement on schedule.
The award was presented on Wednesday, Feb. 13 at a ceremony during the association’s 58th Annual Meeting in Scottsdale, Ariz.
