Interstate 80 traffic is scheduled to be temporarily detoured onto freeway exit ramps in central Carlin beginning March 7 as part of a road improvement project, the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) has announced.

Motorists traveling in either direction of I-80 at the central Carlin interchange will be detoured off of the interstate, onto the interstate exit and on-ramps, and back onto I-80. The detours are tentatively scheduled to take place from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. nightly on Wednesday, March 7 and Thursday, March 8, weather dependent.

The detour will allow placement of large precast beams as part of widening of a portion of the State Route 766 (10th Street) overpass in Central Carlin. The 10th Street overpass will also be narrowed to one lane, and controlled by flaggers, with slight construction delays.

The work is part of an ongoing project begun in November to enhance the west and central Carlin I-80 interchanges. The project will add a westbound off-ramp and eastbound on-ramp at the west Carlin interchange for increased access between I-80 and State Route 278. A concrete box culvert will also be extended. Separately at the central Carlin interchange, the eastbound off-ramp will be widened and a northbound acceleration lane added on the state route.

Construction of the entire project is scheduled to complete by fall 2012. The approximately $7 million in construction improvements by contractor Q & D Construction will increase access and improve safety.

Motorists are advised to drive at posted construction speed limits, or slower as necessary for conditions. Updated Nevada road conditions and construction information are available by dialing 511 before driving. NDOT also offers safe work zone driving tips on-line at www.nevadadot.com/safety.
