Water Quality
Runoff from roads and road construction near creeks, rivers and lakes can have a detrimental effect on water quality. The NDOT Water Quality specialist works with Roadway Design to minimize this potential degradation. Some of the tools used to maintain Nevada’s water quality include:- Revegetation for erosion control
- Building detention basins to allow sediments to settle before reentering waterways
- Directing road runoff to bioretention systems (infiltration for ground water recharge)
- Filtering stormwater runoff from NDOT construction sites through Best Management Practices like vegetated buffer strips and rice straw wattles
The Water Quality team’s goal is to ensure that the water quality after an NDOT project is just as good, if not better, than it was before the project.
